Sexual and Gender-Based Violence workshops, 2009/2010

Between October 2009 and March 2010, LCED in collaboration with UNFPA conducted several SGBV trainings and sensitization activities for women associations and government officials (at county and state level) in Western Equatoria State, South Sudan. The activities took place in the counties of Yambio, Tombura, Ezo, Nzara, Nagero, Mvolo, Mundri East, and Mundri West, with an average duration of 5 days for each workshop.

  • Description: Male and female participants to the SGBV workshop conducted in Yambio county (15-19 October 2009) involved in an icebreaking activity, aimed at introducing a topic related to gender and GBV. In the past, SGBV has been perceived as strictly female concern, thus such workshops were attended only by women, while men would fear to participate because of stigma.

  • Description: Participants were asked to define a series of concepts related to gender, such as sex, gender, gender roles, femininity and masculinity, feminism, etc. The workshop was based on active participation, practical exercises and group work, which helped the participant to better understand concepts and dynamics related to SGBV, and to share views and beliefs about the phenomenon.

  • Description: Facilitator illustrating the historical efforts towards gender equality, and programs to fight GBV that were inspired by such efforts. The participants were also provided with insights on the international legal instruments and approaches towards gender equality, human rights, women rights, and fighting GBV.

  • Description: Participants during an icebreaker aimed at bringing up the dynamics of gender construction. The members were asked to form couples, and to imagine that they had been married for 30 years with no children. Given the possibility of having a child at that point, the couples were supposed to decide if they would prefer a son and a daughter, and explain why. The facilitator then helped the group to de-construct the notion of gender and show how some pre-conceptions/assumptions lead to harmful practices towards girls and for the whole society.

  • Description: Facilitator explaining to the plenary the difference between the concepts of violence, gender-based violence (GBV - both towards men and women) and violence against women. One of the objectives of the session was to increase the participants’ understanding of the concept, forms and extent of GBV, in order to highlight the need for urgent action by different sectors of the society.

  • Description: Group of participants conducting the analysis of a specific gender issue in Western Equatoria State, and discussing ways to overcome the problems, as strategies of gender mainstreaming. Gender mainstreaming is the process of making gender equality part of the mainstream, so that women and men can benefit equally from development interventions. The participants were divided in six groups analyzing the following topics under a gender perspective: health, education, land and agriculture, economy, leadership/decision-making, and welfare.

The SGBV workshops conducted in Western Equatoria State were a success, since they led to different organization to develop gender-sensitive programs, and different interventions to fight SGBV and to rehabilitate the victims.
